Independent Research: Access to Gender-Inclusive Children’s Picture Books in Hartford Public Libraries

To complete my Education major at Trinity College, I completed a senior capstone project. I chose to examine the representation of female-presenting characters in children's picture books.

I randomly selected 10 picture book collections at both the Hartford and West Hartford public libraries to evaluate. I rated the female characters in each book on outfits, actions and dialogue of the female characters.

Once I had my results, I presented my findings to the Board of Directors at each library. At the Hartford Public Library, I established a permanent gender-inclusive book display in the children's section.

The display has a wide selection of books that represent strong female characters and other untraditional gender rolls.

Text reads: “STRONG WOMEN. Check out this display of gender-inclusive texts curated by Trinity College senior Katie Cerulle"
